Exploring Representation of the Christian community on Electronic and Social Media in Pakistan: A Critical Discourse Analysis
This paper aims to explore the representation of Christian son electronic and social media in Pakistan. The study is based on the qualitative research method using Van Dijk's socio-cognitive model. The research results indicate that Pakistani electronic media is more concerned about market dynamics and power structures than constitutional narratives. Only the elite segment of the population, particularly politicians and business tycoons, can access electronic media. Another theme is the poor portrait of the Christian community, which is persecuted without adequate redressal. Moreover, access to social media is a great source for Christians to get coverage about the issue of forced conversions and marriages. In conclusion, this research suggests that the government must revise the PEMRA laws to ensure pluralism, freedom of speech and diversity. It is also argued that students should equip with tools like this research employed to analyze dominant discourses.
